Since we are facing another move in our near future. I have been thinking a lot about rental decorating. It can be difficult, exhausting, and exciting moving around. A move creates new challenges for making a home you and your family loves. Positive thinking is essential for a successful and happy move. Whether it is across the country, the globe, or just across town, keep in mind these few tips for a smooth transition.
Embrace your new environment.
Even if it isn’t your top pick or anywhere on your list of “places you want to live”. Let the coast, country, city, mountains, or desert be part of your inspiration for projects, updates, and repurposing.
Seize the opportunity to change the decor in your living space.
We tend to be creatures of habit and use our belongings for the same function we bought them for. Take a chance and try to use them in a different room or for a different function. You can achieve an entire new look and feel for your home with things you already own. Be creative with placement, repurposing (paint!!!), and functionality. Shoot! You don’t even have to move to do this!
Here are a few of my favorite repurposed pieces from our last move!
It’s okay to splurge. A little.
Is there a piece of furniture you have been eyeing for a while? A new couch? Or maybe a headboard? Reward yourself with something new! After all of that packing, moving, cleaning, repairs, unpacking, etc…. YOU DESERVE IT!
(I had been wanting this chandelier for three years. I finally bought it on sale after our last move!)
Don’t be afraid to hang things on the wall!!!
I can’t say that enough. With military families, you can move handful of moves in just a few short years. Don’t let that stop you from hanging things you love on the wall. If you really don’t want holes in the walls, use command strips. But really, it is super easy to take care of holes, especially if there is touch up paint already lying around. You can also lean larger pieces on your dresser, buffet, counters…
Get out and explore.
Bring in local finds (man made or natural) into your decor.
