Inspired by DIY: West Elm

Greetings.  I hope your week is off to a great start!  We are preparing for our upcoming move to mainland Japan so we’ve been super busy but I’m still making time for DIYs.

This month’s Inspired by DIY is West Elm which happens to be one of my favorite stores.  I had a lamp shipped to me earlier this year that arrived damaged.  It’s been living in a cabinet for while waiting for a makeover so the first thing I looked for under West Elm’s website was a desk lamp.   I found a gorgeous black and gold work lamp that was the perfect inspiration.

Here’s what you need to repurpose an outdated lamp into a swanky West Elm inspired light:

An outdated or damaged desk lamp

Black craft paint

Brass or gold craft paint

Small and large paint brushes

Wood base

Drill

Disassemble your lamp if there are any damaged parts that need to be replaced.  (I was lucky that I could replace the dented base with a wood one.)

To get the West Elm look, paint the shade black.  Use a small brush to cut around the edges or tape off for clean lines.   Paint the base black.  (I used leftover chalkboard paint.) lamp-makeover-wood-base-painted-black lamp-makeover-black

After the base is dry, dry brush on gold or brass paint.  (If the arm of your lamp isn’t brass or gold, spray paint it with a couple of light coats of metallic paint.) lamp-makeover-black

Reassemble your lamp.  (If using a wood base for replacement, drill a hole and secure the lamp with a screw.)

I’m really happy with the way it turned out!  It looks much more expensive and compliments my piano perfectly. west-elm-diy-lamp-makeover

I can’t wait to create a DIY Geometric Wall in our future new home.   The black, white, and gold look stunning together!  I have so much fun creating projects like this that I even wrote an ebook full of them!   You can read all about it at Love Your Space.   Are you up for a 30 day decorating and organizing challenge?piano-wall-tall-west-elm-lamp-pinterestpin-it-button

  1. I somehow completely forgot you guys are moving! Good luck!
I love the lamp, great fun to fix something that’s broken (even if it wasn’t supposed to be at first).
    Love it!

  2. I always think you are going to do one thing and you always seem to shock me! I love this tutorial and this lamp. You always seem to choose things that I think looks to hard to recreate and you make it look so effortless. I love how the lamp looks on your piano.
