$100 Room Makeover:  Master Bedroom

hosted by Erin from Lemons, Lavender, and Laundry

week 1: inspiration | week 2: update | week 3:  DIY basket wall art | week 4: reveal

We’ve been in our house for 2 months now.  We have rearranged furniture and decked it out for the holidays so I’m ready to have a couple of completed rooms ready for year round.   For this particular room makeover, I’m tackling our master bedroom.  Our Japanese rental is under 1300 sq ft and it shows in this room.  Our queen bed takes up most of the space and what’s left is exposed vinyl flooring and walls. Yuck!   So my goal is create a calm space with a global eclectic feel.

The inspiration:

A few inspiration items I already have or own something similar.   The rest I will purchase or DIY!

The space:

There’s a nice big garden window, patio doors, and a funny little window off to the side. Since they are all different sizes, I’m streamlining the window treatments with fabric shades I’ve already purchased but may spruce them up.

My husband and I have already tried a couple of different furniture arrangements and this seems to work the best.  The quatrefoil headboard on this wall takes up a lot of blank wall space but leaves the windows unblocked.

We have one bathroom sink so I’ve grown accustomed to sitting on the floor in front a mirror to put on makeover.   I plan on turning my desk into a vanity and much needed storage in the bedroom.

The far wall is our only clothing storage in the room.  Thank goodness it’s floor to ceiling height so we have a place to store luggage and off season clothing.  I plan to add some interest to this wall!

Once we have our bedside tables and TV in the right place, I only have a little wall space and the big garden window sill to work with.

Here’s how I plan on using the $100:

Plants – a garden for the windowsill and possible wall art

Color – a mix of bedding and textiles from my house (I also have some beautiful silk Kimono fabric!) free

Texture – 100 yen store baskets (I have a DIY up my sleeve for this one!)

Interest – an eclectic mix of decor elements (from “shopping” the house) free

Lighting – DIY shell chandelier and appropriate bedside lighting

*The two window shades for the room were $80 and won’t be calculated into the makeover budget.

A huge thanks to Erin for putting this challenge together!  It is definitely helping me make progress in our new home.  Check out the other participants below!

  1. Hi Kathy,

I’m doing my master too. You have so much great natural light in room which I so envy. I love your ideas and can’t wait to see the end result.

    1. Thanks! I’m so glad I chose to do this room. It needs major help and I didn’t have any inspiration until I actually sat down and put that moodboard together. Then the ideas flowed! lol xoxo

  2. I always marvel at how you are able to transform the tiny spaces you live in. I know when you’re done it will feel cozy and expertly styled. Excited to watch it happen!

  3. Wow, I cannot wait to see this makeover. I LOVE small spaces. I saw the wall storage and thought that you had to be overseas somewhere. I feel like Americans are just the worst at making the most out of smaller spaces. Great inspiration board too!
