Rental Kitchen Refresh Update

Greetings!  It’s time for an update of our rental kitchen for the New Year New Room Refresh Challenge hosted by Casa Watkins Living.  If you are coming from This is Our Bliss, welcome!

New Year New Room Refresh:  Global Eclectic Rental Kitchen

week 1 | week 2 | week 3 | week 4

Last week, I shared the mood board and shopping guide with some before pics.  No lie, this kitchen is a challenge!  We have made some progress so let’s get to it.

japanese rental kitchen small space

We found a kitchen cart at a local thrift store for about $40 which is a good deal for resale furniture in Japan.  I really like the wood tone against the gray tile.   By the way ,the black pot on the right works as a slow cooker and an oven.  It’s a lifesaver but I wish I had room to store when not in use…   It’s too big for any cabinets in the kitchen.

My husband took down the hideous, greasy shelf unit that was under the cabinet and installed an IKEA rack so we can display our copper pots.  After I finish polishing them,  they will be so sparkly and pretty!!  Definitely thinking about adding artwork on the tile.

Here’s a little review of the plans with updates.

The plan:

Create a focal point with new wallpaper.

Add more storage and counter space with a kitchen cart/island.

Update hardware with recycled copper pulls from our last rental kitchen.

Add a colorful rug to brighten up the space.

Include more wood tones with counter top storage and cutting boards.

Brighten up the gray tile with a mirror or art.

Display our existing copper pots and pans with a stainless steel rail to free up cabinet space and add more interest.

The biggest “to do” on the list will be the new wallpaper!  It’s just gorgeous.  My husband and I are trying to decide if we cover the existing textured wall paper or remove it first.  Japanese wallpaper is nothing like American wallpaper.  Not sure what we’ll find if we try to peel it off!
